Shira Burns is a certified K-5 elementary school educator. She received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, and her Master's of Science Degree in Elementary Reading and Mathematics from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Collectively her teaching experience consists of 10+ years within the classroom. In her years of serving as an elementary educator, Burns has taught grades 2-4 and currently teaches 4th grade. Meeting students where they are and helping them make progress has always been of high priority for Burns. Through differentiating lessons to meet the needs of the individual students, frustration levels are kept at a minimum and aids students in developing a growth mindset. Burns regularly uses a variety of formative assessments to gauge what students know prior to and during ongoing instruction, as well as summative assessments to determine what has been learned after instruction has been implemented. Burns founded iSchol@r Distance Tutoring to assist in closing academic gaps students may experience due to school closures as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through distance learning, Burns continued to provide instruction for her students and has successfully homeschooled her own two children (grades 7 and 12) via the web. The purpose of her tutoring program is to assist students in preparing for the next grade level by retaining previously taught skills while getting a head start on what is to come in the next grade level. |
